While we may have earned every one of our worry or laughter lines, the prospect of these permanent creases in the skin may not appeal to everyone. Botox® is a purified preparation of botulinum toxin Type A, obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox® Cosmetic is a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe upper facial lines and wrinkles in people from 21 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Botox (Botulinum Toxin) causes a temporary paralysis of the treated facial muscles and this allows the lines to soften over a few weeks to months. By doing this, the muscles cannot contract and therefore tend to relax. When muscles relax, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles continue to work in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected by the treatment.
Botox is most commonly performed in the upper face. The most requested areas for the use of Botox are the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines, and crows feet or laughter lines.
Botox is a simple and safe clinic procedure. Botox® is injected with a very fine needle into the muscles of the affected areas. Depending on the area treated several injections may be necessary.
There is no immediate response to the Botox® injections. It takes several days for the muscles to be affected. The effects are temporary and last approximately 3-6 months. Repeat injections will be required after this period of time to maintain the skin smoothing effects. After several treatments, the effects of Botox may begin to last longer, sometimes up to six to eight months.
There are very few side effects to this procedure. You may experience a mild burning sensation with injection like the snapping of an elastic band and a local anesthetic cream can be applied if patient prefers. Minimal bruising may occur. While allergy to any medicine is possible Allergic reactions to Botox® are extremely rare.
In 2005, almost 3.3 million procedures were performed with FDA-approved Botox® Cosmetic.
